An open letter to Google Chrome from a Web Developer

Posted by Kapil in September 2nd 2008

Dear sir,

I congratulate your team to come up with a new chrome browser. The more I think of spending time with my family and friends, you guys come up with a new browser or a variant of an old one :

I know I need to work overtime now but please clarify following things that can help me

1. Can I migrate my settings/bookmarks from IE or firefox ?

2. Is Google Chrome an alternative to firefox ? Is it a good news for firefox community ? Google recently extended its financial deal with Mozilla until 2011. So firefox can’t do much, right ?

Update : Mrinal says,”I personally dont agree with opinions critical of Google’s decision to not make these changes in Firefox and implement a new browser . FireFox is an already built system and making fundamental changes relating to process/memory management can be hard in an already built system.”

3. Will my javascript need to be retested/rewritten in chrome’s newly developed JavaScript Virtual Machine called V8 ? Yes, my AJAX stuff will run fast on this V8 engine but why couldn’t you integrate it in Firefox(its open source,so we can) ? I am also using a bunch of frameworks like prototype or Yahoo YUI library.I hope I dont have to download the new version of these frameworks very soon.

Update :Mrinal Wadhwa - Chrome is built on WebKit which is Apple Safari’s open sourced rendering engine so many of your questions regarding compatability etc. are invalid and are answered by this fact.

4. I love my firefox plugins (especially firebug/web developer toolbar/greasemonkey), Can I migrate them to google chrome ?

5. As a web developer,I hate this when my clients/QA would say,” Kapil, this is not working in chrome“.

6. I hope I don’t have to do chrome specific tweaking for correct CSS rendering.

7. With your newly built task manager, my clients/QA can see what CPU usage, memory usage and network usage my web application is taking which was not possible in other browsers(except, possibly in IE 8).Now,I can’t blame anybody.

8. I hope chrome supports Java(javafx), Silverlight, flash,AIR and other RIA stuff also because the guy in the corner seat of my office is very excited about this stuff.

Update : Samiq Bits has tested all major RIA stuff on Chrome. Its working great.

9. Can I integrate your competitior’s services like Yahoo search or Windows LIVE as default ? I hope they run pretty seamless as Google search will run on Google chrome.

10. I have to learn Gears development . My boss will tell me now gears is pretty default thing in browsers, we can go ahead with making offline version of our web app. There will be good demand of gears developers in future.

As long as you help me in migrating my users from IE 6.0, I am ready to do this work.Anyways, do I have any other option ?

regards,
Kapil Bhatia

Really stupid questions.

It is webkit. Yes, check javascript, don’t work? Will be a bug in implementation, they will fix it. Keep your javascript standard
